Did you know?
Cleveland has one of the highest infant morality rates in the country. The average infant mortality rate for Cuyahoga County is 13 per 1,000 live births. That is more than double the national average. In some local areas, that number skyrockets to 35 infant deaths per every 1,000 live births. In Cleveland, 17% of children are born prematurely, and 13% had a low birth weight. Both numbers are significantly higher than the national average, and put children at great risk for infant death and other health issues throughout the course of their lives. Child Health Day aims to bring awareness to this issue in our community.
How is Rainbow helping?
Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital has launched in a new program called "A Box for Every Baby." The program is designed to educate new parents on how to properly care for their infant, as well as provide free supplies necessary for the health of the child. Through the program, every parent receives a free cardboard box with a mattress for their child to sleep in. Studies have shown that these baby boxes help reduce sleep related infant deaths. Additionally, the program provides education on how to properly swaddle, feed, and bathe infants. The program, in its first year, will hopefully help reduce infant mortality rates and allow more children to grow up to live happy and healthy lives.
